"What After-school Means to Me" Essay Contest winner loves BHC
Three young authors read their original essays to a gathering of more than 100 NYC after-school site coordinators and other program leaders at a TASC Peer Conference last week after winning a contest, sponsored by TASC, to write the most persuasive essays on the topic of what their New York City after-school programs mean to them.

Dawon Thomas, a third grader at PS 85, wrote, \\\"Mr. Pat has a club called Building Healthy Communities where you get to know about diabetes, healthy snacks and why exercise is so important for your body. We did a walk marathon in our community. It was a great experience, and I will ask Mr. Pat if we can do it again next year.\\\"

National Physical Fitness & Sports Month
May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. Being physically fit is important. It creates happier, healthier and more productive lives. You can get involved by promoting awareness about the importance of being active and healthy.

There are many different ways you can be involved in National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. Start small, encourage your class/school to incorporate more fitness activities during the day. You can join a sports team or start one of your own. Get the whole school involved and help plan a Physical Fitness Day for everyone.

The President’s Council on Physical Fitness & Sports encourages young people to get involved on a larger scale and help plan a fitness event that the whole community can benefit from. This takes time and planning, but with the help of your school and the community, you can create a very successful event.

Here is how to get started:
1 - Form a group at school that will help plan the event and will reach out to local community organizations for additional help
2 – Once you have interest from the community, form an event planning team
3 – Make a schedule to have weekly meetings and assign jobs for each member
4 – Pick a venue and a date
5 – Start doing some fundraising and soliciting from local organizations to donate things for the event (i.e. food, water, equipment, etc)
6 – Reach out to fitness organizations to have them participate in the event
7 – Come up with a schedule for the day of the event and follow up to secure all details for the event
8 – Promote the event

Event ideas:
- Health and Fitness Fair
- Fitness Festival
- Fitness Talks/Films/Trainings
- Walk/Marathon
- Sports All Day

March is National Nutrition Month
Knowing which foods to eat is the first step in creating a nutritional diet, but you also need to know how much food to consume. Overloading your plate, living on seconds and eating until you are stuffed can lead to excess calorie, fat and cholesterol intake. Even portions served in resturants are often much more than anyone needs. To keep calories down, keep track of the number of servings you eat and use proper serving sizes to help control your intake.

Check out some useful portion size tools for you and your students at:

The 3 R’s? A Fourth Is Crucial, Too: Recess
Great Article from the NYTimes. Here is an excerpt:

The best way to improve children’s performance in the classroom may be to take them out of it.

New research suggests that play and down time may be as important to a child’s academic experience as reading, science and math, and that regular recess, fitness or nature time can influence behavior, concentration and even grades.

A study published this month in the journal Pediatrics studied the links between recess and classroom behavior among about 11,000 children age 8 and 9. Those who had more than 15 minutes of recess a day showed better behavior in class than those who had little or none. Although disadvantaged children were more likely to be denied recess, the association between better behavior and recess time held up even after researchers controlled for a number of variables, including sex, ethnicity, public or private school and class size.

February is Happy Heart Month!
Heart disease remains the #1 cause of death in the United States, killing about half a million people each year--closely followed by Stoke and Diabetes--all obesity related diseases.

Coronary heart disease used to be thought of as a disease of the middle aged and the elderly. Over the last twenty years it has become increasingly clear that atherosclerosis – damage to arteries from fatty buildup begins in childhood. The fact remains, the best time to make changes is now.

Teachers and parents can help by making sure kids spend at least 60 minutes a day in active play, make wise food choices, and avoid exposure to secondhand smoke.

5 Fruits and Veggies a Day
USDA recommends 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, which for many of us can be a big challenge, while at the same time trying to cut from the Fats, Oils and Sweets group OR the Bread, Cereal, Rice and Pasta Group

First, we need to know -what is a serving?

Here is a sample from the USDA Food and Nutrition Services (http://www.fns.usda....g_size.pdf) chart for all the food groups:

The Vegetable Group

- 1 cup green salad.......... is a fist or a tennis ball

- 1 baked potato.......... is a fist or a tennis ball

- 3/4 cup tomato juice.......... is a small Styrofoam cup

- 1/2 cup cooked broccoli.......... is a scoop of ice cream or a light bulb

- 1/2 cup serving.......... is 6 asparagus spears/7 or 8 baby carrots/1 ear of corn

The Fruit Group

- 1/2 cup of grapes (15 grapes).......... is a light bulb

- 1/2 cup of fresh fruit..........is 7 cotton balls

- 1 medium size fruit .......... is a fist or a tennis ball

- 1 cup of cut-up fruit.......... is a fist or a tennis ball

- 1/4 cup raisins.......... is a large egg or a golf ball

Healthy Snacks
Fruit and veggie snacks are a great way to reach nutrition goals, get a bit of energy and curb hunger. See our posting below for a fantastic suggestions for tasty and healthy snacks (http://buildhealth.w...these-out/) and celebratory foods!

Recipe: oven roasted carrot fries
This is another way to have super vitamin A rich snacks or side. If you have access to the school kitchen, or can get help from the cafeteria staff, consider providing this snack for students:

Ingredients

12 carrots
3 tablespoons good olive oil
1 1/4 teaspoons kosher salt
1/2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
2 tablespoons minced fresh dill or parsley
Directions

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

If the carrots are thick, cut them in half lengthwise; if not, leave whole. Slice the carrots diagonally in 1 1/2-inch-thick slices. (The carrots will shrink while cooking so make the slices big.) Toss them in a bowl with the olive oil, salt, and pepper. Transfer to a sheet pan in 1 layer and roast in the oven for 20 minutes, until browned and tender.

Toss the carrots with minced dill or parsley, season to taste, and serve.

Recipe from Ina Garden/Food Network (http://www.foodnetwo...index.html).

Some reviewers noted that it worked best when all carrots were the same thickness for even cooking, and some liked theirs cooked for 30 mins to carmelize. Martha Stewart makes hers with a lemon/honey sauce (http://www.marthaste...n-dressing) which will make the dish appealing to those who think they don't even like carrots.

November is a Month of Health
Turkey, mashed potatoes, rice and beans, plantain... you may get a little 'stuffed' this season, and just in time for the holidays, The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene have launched their Calorie Education Campaign online. This is the site's Recommended Calorie Intake Chart for Men, Women and Children.

I recommend using it in addition to a personalized calorie plan found through How Stuff Works.com's Calorie Calculator (http://nutrition.abo...lguide.htm). The Calculator is a personalized tool that can show you exactly how many calories it takes for you to reach your ideal weight.

With all the extra calorie intake this season, it makes perfect sense to pay extra attention to health and wellness. No wonder November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, and in the name of cohesive partnership, Diabetes month shares its spotlight with a number of related health diseases, including Diabetic Eye Disease, (Diabetes can damage small blood vessels in the eye over time, resulting in permanent vision loss), Diabetic Retinopathy (which is the cause of most new cases of blindness in the United States today), and Diabetic foot health issues (complications from Diabetes can occur in feet due to long-term damage to small blood vessels and nerves in the extremities. Regular foot screenings are a necessary part of good diabetes care and can help detect small changes before they turn serious.) (Taken from: http://diabetes.abou...health.htm)

PS 64x in Bronx, NY did their part to bring awareness to the battle against Diabetes. After hosting a guest speaker from the American Diabetes Association (http://www.diabetes.org/), New Settlement Site Coordinator, Madeline Rosario, motivated her entire after-school program to take action. Working together with the ADA's School Walk for Diabetes Program (http://schoolwalk.diabetes.org), students created awareness t-shirt, sashes, and hats which they dawned as they walked from their school to Bronx Lebanon Hospital and back chanting "Help End Diabetes" on Friday, November 14th. Students have a few days after the event to collect their final donations which will help the ADA in their goal toward finding a cure for the disease.

Healthy snacking made cool - check these out!
Healthy snacking and healthy food at celebrations and "bake sales" can be especially challenging in after-school programming. In reviewing the new resource for after-school programs: Healthy Kids, Healthy New York Initiative Toolkit (http://www.nyshepa.o...hykids.php)"Healthy Snacks for Kids" on p. 52 stood out (see below).
Check out the toolkit for other useful ideas. In addition, your NY licensed after-school program that implements the guidelines can apply to receive formal recognition from the Governor's Office in the spring.
